Harry Potter is one of the most famous novel series that has been adapted to different mediums such as live-action and animated movies/ series, and also stage performances and games. There is no exact theme of the Harry Potter series as it has 7 different books that dwell into all genres that can be named: fantasy, horror, thriller, mystery, and even romance.
Harry Potter’s success can be seen from its insane sales of 500 million copies making it the highest-selling book series in the world. To put in perspective how big this number is, the second highest-selling book series, Goosebumps, has only 350 million copies of sales. The franchise is famous all over the world having translated its books into 80 different languages.
The series is known to have a wide range of characters. From normal-looking humans to alien-like villains the series has it all. We know most of the characters’ faces, and their power types, but do we know how tall they are?
While the novels have not pointed out the height of the characters directly. We have presented you with some of the Harry Potter character’s heights with the help of small pieces of evidence from the novel for both the fictional characters as well as live-action actors.
Harry Potter
Story Character: Starting with the protagonist himself. Most of the story revolves around Harry’s character and that is pretty understandable as his name is the name of the series itself. Born on 31 July 1980 in the books, Harry James Potter is an orphan and a wizard who has a very dark background.
We all know how Harry Potter looks and what his powers are (if you’ve watched it), but we are not quite sure about his height. According to the novel, Initially, Harry was a short guy but over the years he grew up to become the same age as his father.
Harry James Potter might measure around 1.8 m – 1.82 m or 5’11 – 6’0 ft high in the story.
Live-action character: The live-action version of Harry Potter was played by actor Daniel Radcliffe. Born on 23 July 1989 in London, England, Radcliffe has played the role of Harry Potter for all of the live-action movie adaptations from 2001’s Philosopher’s Stone to 2011’s Deathly Hallows – Part 2.
Starting at an age of just 12 years old, Radcliffe was also quite a short guy but ultimately grew up. As of now, Radcliffe is around 1.65 meters or 5’5 ft high in real life.
Hermione Granger
Story Character: Known as one of the closest characters to Harry Potter, Hermione Jean Granger is an academically gifted student of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Granger was born on 19 September 1979 and entered the school of witchcraft at an age of just 12.
Just like many characters in Harry Potter, Hermione Jean Granger’s height is a mystery and was never mentioned in the books. However, several texts were showing Granger as a character shorter than Harry Potter.
Based on certain evidence, Granger’s height can be assumed to be around 1.64 to 1.67 meters or 5’4 to 5’5 in the books.
Live-action character: Hermione Granger’s role in all eight Harry Potter films was played by Emma Watson. Born on 15 April 1990, Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson received the role of Granger in 1999 after completing 8 auditions.
Watson’s first on-screen debut was in the role of Granger in the 2001’s movie Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. She would then go on to play the role for seven other sequels of the movie.
The height of Emma Watson is believed to be similar to that of the character she starred as in the movies at around 1.65 meters or 5’4 foot.
Ron Weasley
Story character: Another character known to be the closest to Harry Potter in the series and considered his best friend is Ronald Bilius Weasley. Weasley was born on 1st March 1980 in a poor family, but Weasley had much magic knowledge at a very early age due to his growing up in a magical community.
Ron has a character similar to that of a typical protagonist’s best friend who is a loyal person but also sometimes gets jealous of the protagonist. According to the novels, Ron is taller than Harry and Hermione so he must be at least 6 feet tall.
Based on assumptions, we can expect Ron to be 1.92 to 1.95 meters tall or 6’3 to 6’4 foot tall.
Live-action character: The character of Ron Weasley is played by the British actor, Rupert Alexander Lloyd Grint. Popularly known as Rupert Grint, Grint was born on 24th August 1988. Grint was a fan of the novel before he played the role of Ron so when casting calls were out Ron left no chances and send the audition team a video of himself.
Grint, later, received the role in Harry Potter in 1999 at an age of 11 together with his co-actors Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson.
While Grint was shorter when he played the role back in 2001 to 2011, Grint is currently 1,73 meters or 5’6 foot tall.
Severus Snape
Story character: Introduced as the professor of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Severus Snape is a character who is portrayed as a cold person in the story. At first, the character seemed like someone who was just cruel and had no past but later it was revealed that he used to be bullied by Harry’s father James Potter and had a very hard past.
Snape is one of those characters that went to any extent to get back to his love. The main reason for much of his evil misdoings was the result of that same thing. Unlike the trios, Severus would die fighting Lord Voldemort.
Severus Snape’s only mention of height was when harry talked about how Snape is slightly shorter than Sirius. This could mean that Snape had a height of around 1.8 to 1.82 meters or 5’9 to 6 foot in the series.
Live-action character: Severus Snape was adapted to live-action with the help of a British actor, Alan Sidney Patrick Rickman. Born on 21st February 1946, Rickman started his journey with the movie Die Hard in 1988. He would then go on to play in numerous movies before finally landing the role in Harry Potter.
Alan Rickman’s deep voice perfectly suited the character of Severus Snape so he would appear playing his role in 2001’s movie Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Rickman is a tall person with a height of 1.85 meters or around 6’1 foot.
Albus Dumbledore
Story character: Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Albus Dumbledore is one of the crucial characters in the plot of Harry Potter. Dumbledore is one of the oldest characters in the story being born in 1881. He was also the founder of the organization directly fighting against the series’s main antagonist.
Dumbledore is portrayed as the godly figure of the series who stands up against evil in the series. In fact, he was the only wizard in the series that the main antagonist, Voldemort, was afraid of. He planned his death with Snape and ultimately played a role to defeat Voldemort even after his death.
Albus Dumbledore is also one of the characters that are described as a tall person. Based on assumptions, we can guess Albus Dumbledore to be around 1.9 to 1.93 meters or 6’3 to 6’4 foot tall.
Live-action character: Playing the role of Albus Dumbledore is the late Richard St John Francis Harris, an Irish actor, and singer. Born on October 1st, 1930, Richard Harris had a fantastic career in his lifetime. Started as a rugby player, but tuberculosis shatters his athletic career and he would later aim to be a director.
Harris would make his film debut in 1959’s Alive and Kicking. Initially, Harris was hesitant to take the role of Dumbledore because of his health and his fear of the role in Harry Potter outshining the rest of his career, but ultimately, he accepted the role and did an amazing role of playing it.
Richard Harris, at the time of shooting the film, was around 1.85 meters or 6 feet tall.
Voldemort (Tom Riddle)
Story character: The main antagonist of the Harry Potter series is the one and only Tom Marvolo Riddle, commonly referred to as Lord Voldemort. Voldemort is considered the most dangerous character in all of Harry Potter. The whole plot of the series was to defeat him so he was the most influential character in all of Harry Potter.
Voldemort was described by the author herself as “a raging psychopath, devoid of the normal human responses to other people’s suffering.” which clearly shows the type of character he is in the series. While he was also a former student at Hogwarts as Tom Riddle, he would later learn Dark Arts and after mastering name himself “Lord Voldemort.”
In the novel, Tom Riddle is said to be a tall character, so based on that, we can predict that Voldemort’s height is around 1.86 to 1.88 meters or 6’1 to 6’2 foot tall.
Live-action character: The character of Voldemort is played by many actors for his childhood, teenage, human, and cursed versions. The one that played the cursed version is Ralph Nathaniel Twisleton Wykeham Fiennes. Unlike other actors in the movie, Ralph Fiennes did not star in the first Harry Potter movie but only appear in 2005’s Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
Fiennes continued playing the role for 3 more movies through to the end of 2011’s Harry Potter movie. He had already played in several movies by this time, so he did an excellent job of portraying the characteristics of the Dark Lord in the movie.
Ralph Fiennes is believed to have a height of 1.8 meters or 5’11 feet.
Neville Longbottom
Story Character: One of the two children destined to kill Lord Voldemort was Nevill Longbottom. He had a similar past as his friend, Harry Potter, did. While he did not lose his parents, they were still tortured by Death Eaters, the evil organization of Lord Voldemort. Later in the story, Longbottom becomes the godfather of Harry’s children.
Initially, Neville Longbottom’s character is portrayed as someone shy and introverted. This was proved by the author, J.K Rowling when she talked about how Longbottom is always feeling that he was not being good enough. However, as the story progresses, Neville Longbottom becomes a crucial character in defeating the Dark Lord.
While Rowling did not give us a number, she did say that he was shot in her mind. So, Neville Longbottom might be around the height of 1.68 to 1.7 meters or 5′6 to 5′7 feet in the novel.
Live-action character: The live-action version of Neville Longbottom was played by British actor Matthew David Lewis. Lewis started his acting career with an appearance in a TV drama called Some Kind of Life.
Matthew Lewis got the role in the first Harry Potter movie: “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” in 2001. He was part of the team from the very beginning and ended the run with the whole series in 2011 with his final movie “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2.”
Matthew Lewis is about 1.83 meters or about 6 feet tall.
Sirius Black
Story character: The next on this list is Sirius Black who is another important character in Harry Potter. Mentioned only once in the first Harry Potter novel: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Sirius Black is later revealed to be the godfather of the protagonist, Harry Potter. He was a close friend to both of Harry’s parents and was a classmate at Hogwarts.
Sirius Black was described to be a troublemaker in his teenage years together with Harry’s father, James Potter. He was very protective of James Potter but also never missed out on the fun of causing trouble with him. The author describes him as a character who loves his friends, especially James very much and is always there for him.
The novel described him as a character who is handsome and tall. So, Sirius having a height of around 1.85 to 1.88 meters or 6’1 to 6.2 feet makes sense.
Live-action character: Sirius Black, in the live-action movies, was played by Gary Leonard Oldman. Started by acting in several theatres, Oldman made his first appearance on-screen appearance with the 1982’s film Remembrance.
Due to Sirius’s appearance only happening in later books, Oldman’s first appearance as Sirius was in the third installment of the series in 2004’s Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. He appeared in 4 Harry Potter movies from 2004 to the final sequel of the Harry Potter series in 2011.
Gary Leonard Oldman is around 1.74 meters and 5’8.5 feet tall.
George Weasley
Story character: One of the twin sons of the Weasley family is George Weasley. Born on April 1st, 1978 together with his brother Fred Weasley, George Weasley’s birth date corresponding with April Fool’s day is no joke as he later becomes a prankster together with his brother.
George’s character is that of a goofy brother from the perspective of Ron Weasley. He and his twin brother genuinely cared about his brother Ron and his friends, Harry and Hermoine. He was attached to his twin brother more than anyone else and was devastated when he lost him in battle. J.K. Rowling, the author of the novel, also said that George was the quieter one of the twin brothers.
The novel describes George as a tall guy an almost similar height to that of his brother, Ron Weasley. So, it is logical to assume George Weasley to be around 1.88 to 1.9 meters or 6’2 to 6’3 feet tall.
Live-action character: The role of twin brothers is played by real-life twin brothers in the movie from Birmingham, England. Oliver Martyn John Phelps stars as George Weasley while his twin brother, James Andrew Eric Phelps, stars as Fred Phelps in the Harry Potter movies.
The debut on-screen appearance of Oliver Phelps was in the 2001’s Harry Potter movie. Both of the twins had no prior acting experience before playing the role. Despite having no experience, they did a great job in the movie. They appeared in all of the 9 Harry Potter movies from 2001 to 2011.
Oliver Phelps’s height is 1.91 meters or 6’3 feet tall.
Draco Malfoy
Story character: There is always a character in every story who is a bully and always causes problems for the protagonist. Draco Lucius Malfoy is exactly that character in the Harry Potter series. Raised completely differently than Harry Potter, Draco Malfoy is a privileged pure-blooded kid who used to look down on half-blood people.
While he was a bully, Draco changed most of his old beliefs and changed to be a loving and honest person after what had happened to him during his time at Hogwarts. He was a very clever person from the very beginning but was very much spoiled by his parents which made him the way he was.
In the novel, Draco was described to be around the same height as Harry. This means Draco Malfoy is around 1.8 m – 1.82 meters or 5’11 – 6’0 feet tall.
Live-action character: Playing the role of Draco Lucius Malfoy in Harry Potter is Thomas Andrew Felton. Thomas Felton was born on September 22, 1987, and initially, he started his career singing in choirs. He made his first appearance in the 1997’s movie The Borrowers.
Felton got his role after auditioning for it in 1999. His role in Harry Potter made viewers hate him and that showed how much of a great performance he had given in that movie. He appeared in all 8 Harry Potter movies and ended the run with the whole cast in the final installment of the Harry Potter movie.
Thomas Felton has a height of 1.75 meters or 5’9 feet.
Rubeus Hagrid
Story character: The next one on the list is a half-giant and half-human character called Rubeus Hagrid. Rubeus was the classmate of Albus Dumbledore and Tom Riddle, a.k.a Lord Voldemort, who framed him for murder which gets him expelled from Hogwarts.
Rubeus Hagrid is portrayed as a kind and honest big guy in the novel. He is also always there for his friends and is a loyal person. This loyalty is seen throughout the series when he would help Harry numerous times even when it would affect him. He also used to be very angry when people insulted those who he cared about.
The novel describes Rubeus Hagrid to be twice the size of an average human being due to his half-giant blood. This would mean that Rubeus Hagrid has a height of around 3.49 to 3.51 meters or 11’5 to 11’6 feet.
Live-action characters: Appearing as Half-giant/ Half-human in the live-action adaptation of the Harry Potter movie is Anthony Robert McMillan a.k.a Robbie Coltrane. Born in Rutherglen, Scotland on 30 March 1950, Robbie started as a rugby player but later moved to act. His first appearance was on a 1979’s TV series called Play for Today.
After appearing in numerous TV shows and movies, he got the role of half-giant. Coltrane was always at the top of J.K. Rowling’s list to play the role of Rubeus Hagrid. He played the role for all the Harry Potter’s 8 installment movies from 2001 to 2011.
While the character of Rubeus itself is humongous, the live-action actor Robbie Coltrane had a height of an average human adult at around 1.85 meters or 6’1 feet.
Luna Lovegood
Story character: Next on the list is the Luna Scamander, commonly referred to as Luna Lovegood. Luna Lovegood in the novel is portrayed as a person without self-consciousness and someone who is bluntly honest with others without any sympathy. At the same time, she was one of the intelligent kids in Hogwarts.
Luna Lovegood was also subjected to bullying due to her weird characteristics. However, she did not care about them and was unfazed by the bullying. She believes in a lot of superstitions and is the complete opposite of Hermione who believed in logic and facts alone. Luna’s tendency of believing superstitions would later decrease as she matures. Despite these characteristics, Luna loves her friends and cares for them enough to even paint their portraits and stick them on her room’s ceiling.
There is no instance in the novel where there was talk about Luna’s height. Assuming she had an average height for women at that time, Luna Lovegood is probably around 1.63 to 1.63 meters or 5’4 or 5’5 feet tall.
Live-action character: Luna Lovegood’s role was played by an Irish actress, Evanna Patricia Lynch. Born on 16th August 1991, Lynch was a fan of the Harry Potter series from a very early age. Lynch’s acting career started with Harry Potter’s fifth installment movie, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
Evanna Lynch auditioned for the role in 2006 along with 15,000 other girls. She would then receive the role at an age of 14. The author of the novel, J.K. Rowling described Lynch to be the perfect fit for her character, Luna Lovegood. She played the role for a total of 4 movies to the final installment in 2011.
While she was only 14 years old when she played the role in Harry Potter, Evanna Lynch has a height of around 1.58 meters or 5’2 feet currently.
Bellatrix Lestrange
Story character: The next person in this list is a loyal follower of Lord Voldemort. Bellatrix “Bella” Lestrange is a member of Voldemort’s organization, Death Eater. Born on 2nd May 1998, She was considered one of the most violent and sadistic characters in all of Harry Potter world.
The level of her anger and rage can be seen throughout the series with Harry believing her to be as crazy as her master, Voldemort. Being a pure-blood, She also despised half-bloods and non-magical people. Her level of loyalty to the Dark Lord was so big that she was willing to hurt even her close ones for him.
The novel has described Bellatrix Lestrange to be taller than Harry. This would mean that Bellatrix had a height of around 1.83 to 1.85 meters or 6’0 to 6’1 feet.
Live-action character: This evil character was played by Helena Bonham Carter in the live-action movie adaptation of the novel. Bonham Carter started her acting career with minor roles in commercials.
Bonham Carter would play in many movies and shows from 1983 before finally receiving the role of Bellatrix in 2007’s fifth Harry Potter movie: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Bonham Carter continued playing the role for 3 more movies and ended the run together with the rest of the cast members in the final installment released in 2011.
Bonham Carter measures around 1.57 meters or 5’2 feet tall.
Cho Chang
Story character: Cho Chang is another witch from the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Cho Chang is known for having several relationships throughout Hogwarts, even dating Harry at some point in the story. Portrayed as a sweet and polite girl, Cho was the popular kid in Hogwarts due to her beauty.
Cho Chang was also shown to be very emotional at times. This might be the result of her then-boyfriend Cedric Diggory’s death in her fifth year at Hogwarts. Overall, Cho Chang is a loyal and brave person.
While Harry did mention Cho to be a little taller than him, it was before he grew up to his peak height. So, based on those pieces of evidence, Cho Chang can be around 1.75 to 1.77 meters or 5’9 to 5’10 feet tall.
Live-action character: The live-action version of Cho Chang was played by Katie Leung who was born on August 8th, 1987 in Scotland. Leung’s acting career started with Harry Potter after she applied for the casting of Cho’s role.
Without any prior acting experience, Katie Leung later stated that her Scottish accent gave her an advantage over 3,000 other applicants. She performed her role very well even though she had never acted before. She appeared in altogether 4 Harry Potter movies from 2005 to 2011.
Katie Leung has a height of 1.64 meters or 5’5 feet.
Remus Lupin
Story character: Remus John Lupin is another character who was in the same generation as Harry’s father. Remus Lupin’s first appearance was in the third book of the Harry Potter series: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. He was a professor at Hogwarts and was regarded as the best defense magic professor by his students.
Remus Lupin was a classmate and best friend of James Potter, Harry’s father when they studied at Hogwarts together. Despite being a werewolf, Remus was one of the mature kids in James’s group because he never took part in bullying other students, unlike others.
There is no mention of him being tall or short in the novel. So, it is safe to assume that Remus Lupin had an average height of around 1.77 to 1.8 meters or 5’10 or 5’11 in the novel series.
Live-action character: The role of Remus Lupin was played by two different actors. The teenage version of the character was played by James Utechin and the adult version was played by David Thewlis. Both of them did a fantastic job of properly portraying the character in the movies.
James Utechin played the role in 2007’s Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix while David Thewlis played the role for 5 different movies from 2004 all the way to the final installment of the Harry Potter series in 2011.
There is no reliable source for Utechin’s height, but David Thewlis is measured to have a height of around 1.89 meters or 6’2 feet.
Dolores Umbridge
Story character: Another dumpster fire character in the Harry Potter series is Dolores Jane Umbridge. Dolores Umbridge is the type of character who is not even a real villain of the series but still manages to gain equal or even more hate than the main antagonist of the series themselves.
Dolores Umbridge especially gained huge hate due to her cruel and arrogant personality in the series. She had huge power and influence on the Hogwarts School due to her high post in the school’s Ministry and was also a professor in the Defence magic department. Dolores tortured many students and also caused a lot of problems for the protagonist throughout his time at Hogwarts. However, despite being a cruel witch, Dolores never joined the Death Eater.
In the novel, Dolores is said to be extremely short than others. So, we can guess Dolores Umbridge to be around 1.52 to 1.54 meters or 5’0 to 5’1 feet tall.
Live-action character: The role of this evil witch is played by Imelda Mary Philomena Bernadette Staunton, in short, Imelda Staunton, in the live-action adaptation of the novel series. Born on 9th January 1956, Imelda Staunton did an amazing job as an actor as well as a singer during her career. She made her first on-screen appearance in 1982’s TV show Playhouse.
After playing in more than 20 movies and TV shows, Staunton received the role of Dolores for 2007’s movie “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.” Her work as Dolores in the movie adaptations was perfect as she could perfectly portray the characteristics of Dolores in the movies.
Imelda Staunton’s height is similar to Dolores making her the perfect person to play the role. Imelda Staunton’s height is measured to be 1.52 meters or 5 feet.
Minerva McGonagall
Story character: Next on this list is Professor Minerva McGonagall who is a fairly neutral type of character. Minerva was the head of Gryffindor House and a professor at Hogwarts school. Minerva is quite respected by some of her students for her strictness in school. Yeah, she is the type of teacher who is always talking about the school’s rules and punishing the misbehaving students in the school.
Professor Minerva was a brave person and cared about her students. She was given the title of Headmistress of Hogwarts by Albus Dumbledore. Minerva also looked over Harry at Hogwarts.
There is no mention of Minerva McGonagall’s height in the novel. If we have to guess then, Professor Minerva Mcgonagall can have a height of around 1.78 to 1.8 meters or 5’10 to 5’11 feet.
Live-action character: The role of professor Minerva was played by one of the most popular actresses Dame Margaret Natalie Smith, commonly known as Maggie Smith. The four-time Emmy winner, Maggie Smith has played more than 60 movies during her career as an actress.
Maggie got the role in 2001 with the first installment of the series. During her time as Professor Minerva, she would make appearances in all Harry Potter movies except the first part of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in 2010. She did an amazing job playing the role and was beloved by the fans.
Maggie Smith is around 1.65 meters or 5’5 feet tall.
Lucius Malfoy
Story character: Another villain from the Harry Potter series is Lucius Abraxas Malfoy. Lucius Malfoy is a pure-blooded wizard from a wealthy family of Malfoy. These characteristics made him a privileged kid who would then join Death Eaters, an organization of Voldemort, later on. Before joining Death Eaters, Lucius was a school governor at Hogwarts.
Lucius Malfoy is an intelligent and ruthless character in the novel. He strongly believed the pure-blood supremacy and despised any half-blood wizards/ witches. Although a member of the evil organization, Lucius Malfoy is a family guy and loved them more than anything else in his life.
In the novel, Lucius Malfoy was a little taller than Harry. So, Lucius Malfoy must have a height of around 1.85 to 1.88 meters or 6’1 to 6’2 feet.
Live-action character: Lucius Malfoy’s role in the live-action adaptation was played by British actor, Jason Isaacs. Born on 6th June 1963, Lucius Malfoy, initially, wanted to work in the field of law but later changed into acting. He started his acting career with an appearance in the 1988’s TV show “This is David Lander.”
Isaacs’s first appearance in the Harry Potter series would be in the second installment of the adaptation. Out of 8 Harry Potter movies, Jason Isaacs made an appearance in 6 of them. He finished the series together with other casts in the final installment.
Jason Isaacs has a height of about 1.8 meters or 6 feet.
Dobby
Story character: Our first all-CGI character in the list. Dobby is an elf from the Harry Potter Series. He served Dark wizard and was always treated with cruelty by them. Dobby is a very sweet character who is loyal and loves to help his friends.
While considerable of his friends, Dobby was seen to lack common sense. This was evident when he tried to help Harry in ways we would never even think of doing. He also betrayed his masters to help Harry which showed how loyal he was. a kind and intelligent kid. He was

Live-action character: Since this character was a CGI work, there is no exact live-action actor behind him. He did have a voice actor who was Tobias Edward Heslewood Jones or simply Toby Jones.
Toby Jones voiced Dobby for two different movies, one in 2002 for the movie Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and another in 2010 for the movie Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1.
Toby Jones has a height of 1.65 meters or 5’5 feet.
Newton Scamander
Story character: Newton Artemis Fido “Newt” Scamander is another character in the Harry Potter series. Newton Scamander was an awkward guy in front of other people. This was mainly due to his love for the magical beasts which took much of his time and decreased his interaction with others.
Newton Scamander was a relatively quiet person. He spent most of his time researching for his book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them where he would provide information about all the magical beasts he had researched. Although he was quiet and shy, Newton was a gentleman. He never bore any hostility and never discriminate against other magic users and non-magic users.
